Astronaut Edward H. White II, pilot of the Gemini-Titan 4 spaceflight on June 3, 1965, appears during his withdrawal from the spacecraft. His face is covered with a shaded visor to protect him from unfiltered sun rays. White became the first American astronaut to go into space.
